Frequently asked questions

What is NAB Travel Tools?

It's a feature within the NAB app that includes an easy to use Foreign Exchange Calculator and some handy travel tips.

The Foreign Exchange Calculator gives you the official Visa currency daily rates for 37 different currencies, including all the big ones - US Dollars, Euros, Japanese Yen, Indonesian Rupiah, British Pounds and New Zealand Dollars2.

Why do I need a Foreign Exchange Calculator?

Ever been shopping overseas and seen something you really want to buy, only you don't know how much it'll cost? You do a quick calculation in your head but you're still not sure. You're certainly not confident enough to start some hard bargaining.

Our Foreign Exchange Calculator gives you a better indication of how much something costs you in Australian Dollars on your NAB Visa card2.

Sounds useful. How do I set it up?

First make sure you've got the current version of the NAB app installed on your phone or device. Our video (above) will take you through the necessary steps, but it's pretty simple1,2,5.

  • Turn on Location Service in your device
  • Login to the NAB Mobile Banking app and go to Settings
  • Tap on Travel Mode. NAB Travel Tools will automatically show up in your app's login screen once your device detects you're out of Australia
  • Tap on Travel on the login screen to bring up the Foreign Exchange Calculator.

How current are your exchange rates?

We get our exchange rates from Visa and they're updated daily2.

How do I update the latest rates on to my device?

To update the exchange rates in NAB Travel Tools, you'll need to connect to the internet. We suggest you do this regularly for the latest daily rate2,5.

But don't stress - the Foreign Exchange Calculator still works even if you're offline. It'll use the most recently updated conversion rates stored on your device.

Are these rates exactly what I'll be charged?

Not necessarily - the exact conversion rate on your statement may differ to Foreign Exchange Calculator's rate because of the time it can take the merchant to process your payment.

Meet Jim

Here’s how he uses the foreign currency converter in the NAB app.

Jim doesn't bite off more than he can chew

Jim is travelling overseas and has booked a table at the hottest restaurant in Prague.  He can’t wait to sample the local fare, though isn’t sure he can afford it as the entire menu is listed in Euros.  By quickly using the Foreign Currency Converter in the NAB app, he’s able to see how much each item costs in Australian dollars and stays within his budget.  Better still, he can still use this feature when not connected to WiFi.1
