If you're experiencing gambling harm, we encourage you to reach out to our Extra Care specialist team as early as possible. Our Extra Care specialist team will be able to discuss your circumstances with you and consider how we can support you to safely manage your banking. 

Reaching out is free and confidential. It won’t affect your banking with NAB and isa step towards getting the help you need. In some cases, we may connect you with trusted referral partners to help you get the right support.

Support options for gambling

Block gambling transactions

You can set up a gambling block to restrict certain gambling transactions like sports betting, casino games, lottery tickets, online gambling, cash advances and credit card transfers. 

  1. Log into the NAB app. 
  2. Select Cards
  3. Tap the debit or credit card you want to update. 
  4. Tap Usage controls
  5. Select Gambling restrictions
  6. Tap the toggle to turn gambling restrictions on or off. 
  7. Read the notice and tap Confirm.

Tailor account settings

We can support you to tailor your account settings.

  • Hide accounts from view on internet banking, so you can't see certain accounts if you don't want to.
  • Restrict access to your savings account, so you can keep some of your money safe in a separate account(s).
  • Set up recurring payments into your savings account, so money is moved to a safe account.

Financial assistance

If you are worried about making repayments such as home loan or credit card repayments, you can request financial assistance, including options like a payment break or a flexible payment arrangement.

You can ask for financial help using NAB Messaging by logging into NAB Internet Banking or the NAB app. Once you message us, our dedicated team will follow up with a phone call to discuss your situation.

Free, independent and confidential financial counselling

Financial counsellors offer free, independent and confidential advice to help you better manage your money and get you back on track. 

A financial counsellor may be able to speak directly with NAB and other lenders on your behalf, so you don’t have to manage conversations with multiple banks or service providers yourself.

What is gambling harm?

Gambling harm is any negative impact gambling has on you, or people close to you. 
It can affect the following.

  • Mental and/or physical health

  • Education or schooling 
  • Overall wellbeing

Signs that you are experiencing gambling harm

  • Spending more time or money on gambling than intended.
  • After losing, having an urge to return as soon as possible to win back losses.
  • Borrowing money or selling assets to gamble.
  • Obtaining money illegally to spend on gambling.
  • Viewing gambling as a way to earn money, profit or income.
  • Feeling guilty or remorseful about your gambling.
  • Having strong negative emotions like anger or sadness at gambling losses.
  • Missing work or other commitments or becoming less involved in regular hobbies.
  • Arguing with family or friends after gambling.
  • Hiding the extent of your gambling.
  • Neglecting responsibilities at home or becoming withdrawn from family or friends.

Frequently asked questions

  • If a primary cardholder and additional cardholder share the same card number, only the primary card holder can apply the gambling restriction. 

    If the gambling restriction applies to one card, it will automatically apply to both cards. 

    If a primary cardholder and additional cardholder have different card numbers, the additional cardholder can apply the gambling restriction to their card. The primary cardholder can apply the gambling restriction to either or both their card and the additional card. 

    If you’re not sure which type of card you have, check with us. 

  • A gambling restriction can be turned on and off using the NAB app. Make sure you have the latest version of the NAB app installed. 

    1. Log into the NAB app. 
    2. Select Cards
    3. Tap the debit or credit card you want to update. 
    4. Tap Usage controls
    5. Select Gambling restrictions
    6. Tap the toggle to turn gambling restrictions on or off. 
    7. Read the notice and tap Confirm

    You can also call NAB Customer Support on 1300 308 175 between the hours of Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 7:00pm (AEST/AEDT). 

    It will take 72 hours to update your preferences if you choose to turn-off gambling restrictions.

  • People with a Power of Attorney


    A Power of Attorney holder may in some circumstances be able to request to apply the gambling restriction by calling NAB Customer Support on 1300 308 175 between the hours of Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 7:00pm (AEST/AEDT) 

    People with third-party access 

    People who have third-party access to another person’s internet banking and they have a personal NAB Visa Debit or credit card. They can apply the gambling restriction to their card via the NAB app. 

  • The gambling restriction blocks most (but not all) gambling transactions for the following types of gambling:


    • sports betting
    • casino games
    • online gambling
    • this includes blocking cash advances and transfers from your credit card account.
