Organising your banking for travel
Check your cards
If you plan to use your credit or debit card while travelling, make sure it’s suitable for overseas use. You can see this information in the NAB app or NAB Internet Banking.
- Check the expiry dates on all your cards well in advance to give yourself time to order new ones if needed.
- Make sure to verify that the limit on your credit cards is enough for your travel needs. This step ensures you're financially prepared for your trip.
- Confirm your daily transfer limits on your accounts, just in case you need to move money around while you're away.
- Some cards have 0% international transaction fees, but other cards might incur a fee if used abroad. Make sure you understand how international transaction fees on certain cards work.
- If you’re an existing credit card or Platinum Visa Debit card holder, check if you are eligible for complimentary travel insurance.
- Your NAB Visa card may also give you access to great benefits like savings on hotels and car hire, complimentary travel insurance and fraud protection.
- Do you know the PIN of your cards? In some countries, you'll need a PIN instead of a signature to authorise transactions on your credit card. If you need to change your PIN, you can do so on the NAB app.
- In the unfortunate case of lost or stolen cards, you'll need to block your card through the NAB app or by calling us on 1800 033 103 within Australia or +61 3 8641 9121 if you're overseas. Save these numbers into your phone.
Set up direct debits for recurring bills
When you’re travelling, thinking about bills can be a bit of a downer. But if you have regular bills, including credit card repayments that you usually pay manually, consider setting up direct debits.
This way, they’ll be automatically debited from your account, taking the stress out of remembering to pay them. All you need to do is pre-authenticate billers by logging into NAB Internet Banking, opens in new window.
Dealing with money abroad
NAB Travel Tools
Once you download the NAP app, you have access to our Travel Tools feature. This suite of useful tools has everything you need to make accessing your money overseas safe and secure.
Track your spending while travelling
You can stay in control of your funds and track your spending with the NAB app. By using the Spending expense tracking tool in the app, you can see where your money is going and stay organised financially.
Learn about foreign exchange rates
Getting a good understanding of how far your money will go while you’re overseas will help you stay within your budget. Using tools like our foreign exchange calculator can give you a good understanding of how far your money will go.
Exchange currency before travelling
It’s also a good idea to exchange currency before your trip to have cash on hand when you arrive at your destination.
Handle cash safely while travelling
Carrying cash while travelling can be risky. It’s a good idea to divide your cash into multiple secure locations and avoid displaying large amounts of cash in public.
Other expenses to consider for your trip
You’ve booked your flights, pre-paid for your accommodation, and put money aside for food allowances. But there are still a few things that get overlooked while planning a holiday budget.
Cost of travel documents
Depending on your travel destination, your requirements will vary. Using handy travel websites like Smartraveller, opens in new window will let you register your travel plans with the government and give you the advice you need about visas and other requirements for those destinations.
- Do you need visas for the destinations you’re visiting? If so, what’s the cost involved?
- Is your passport up to date? If not, you’ll need to budget for the fees to renew your passport, opens in new window.
Travel insurance
Some of our cards offer complimentary international travel insurance. While these are great offers, it doesn’t hurt to read the fine print to see what is and isn’t covered by these insurances. It’s a good idea to put some extra money aside in case you need additional travel insurance to cover your specific needs.
Getting to and from the airport
Another expense that proves to be more expensive the longer you leave it is your travel to and from the airport, both from your home location to your travel destinations. So, plan ahead and think about some of these potential fees:
- airport parking fees
- petrol to and from the airport
- tolls
- services like taxis and Ubers
- shuttles
- rental cars
- rental car insurance
- petrol for rental cars.
