• NAB invests millions to upgrade and modernise Atherton branch

• Large-scale battery-backed backup power system to help keep banking services available during outage.

• Refurbished Atherton branch to open in October. 

A multi-million-dollar investment will transform NAB's Atherton branch and business banking centre, with the upgrade to include one of the bank's first battery-backed power systems to help strengthen access to banking services during severe weather events. 

The upgrade will deliver a full refurbishment, additional Smart ATMs and a Business Express Machine, creating a modern banking centre, with access to local expertise, for customers across the Tablelands.

NAB Atherton Branch Manager Thomas Troncone said the investment would enhance day-to-day banking services while helping strengthen the branch's resilience during disruptions.

"People across the Tablelands know how disruptive severe weather can be, which is why this upgrade includes infrastructure designed to help us continue supporting customers when they need us most," Mr Troncone said.

"When the power goes out, access to banking services can become even more important for households, farmers and small business owners. 

“We're investing in a better banking experience for customers, while also helping us continue supporting the community during disruptions and severe weather events, where it is safe to do so.”

NAB Business Bank Executive for Far North Queensland, Coen Heslop, said the investment reflects Atherton's importance as a regional centre for business and agriculture.

"The Tablelands is the agricultural heart of Far North Queensland, home to generations of farming families, local businesses and industries that help drive the regional economy," Mr Heslop said.

"This refurbishment reinforces our long-term commitment to the region, providing customers with access to modern banking services, contemporary facilities and experienced bankers who understand local needs. 

 "Face-to-face banking remains important in regional communities, and this investment will help us continue delivering that support for years to come."

The Atherton Branch will close temporarily from Monday, 27 July 2026, until early October 2026 while construction works are completed. In the meantime, customers can continue their cash banking at the pop-up Smart ATM at Silo Shopping Centre (2-4 Silo Road). 

While there is a branch at NAB Mareeba (133 Byrnes Street, Mareeba), it is a 30-minute drive away from Atherton, customers can conveniently book a virtual appointment online to connect with the right specialist for support with everything from everyday banking to home lending and other financial needs.
