Foreign currency conversion fees and exchange rates apply when:
Currency conversion exchange rates also apply when funds are moved from one currency to another currency on your card.
Foreign currency conversion fees are 4% of the total transaction value.
There are other instances when these fees and rates will apply. To learn how your NAB Traveller Card works, refer to section 7 of our NAB Traveller Card Product Disclosure Statement and Terms and Conditions (PDF, 389KB).
A pre-authorisation is when a merchant (such as a hotel or car hire company) requests that your bank holds a specific amount of your money. These can last up to 30 days. We don’t recommend that you use your NAB Traveller Card for pre-authorisations.
When using your card at POS terminals and ATMs, you should select ‘credit’3 and not the ‘cheque’ or ‘savings’ option. You will then be asked to enter your PIN or provide a signature on a voucher to confirm the transaction.
Some foreign retailers and ATM operators may give you the choice of paying in either the currency of the country you’re visiting or Australian Dollars.
If you make a transaction overseas and opt to pay in Australian Dollars (instead of the local currency that’s loaded on your NAB Traveller Card), this will result in a foreign exchange transaction. This means there will be an additional cost to you, as the card will seek to transact in Australian Dollars rather than the local currency.4
To avoid unnecessary fees and charges because of insufficient balances in local currencies, check your balances before you make a transaction on either:

1 Loading and reloading your card
Load and reload limits apply. Funds loaded via NAB Internet Banking will be available immediately. The foreign exchange rate quoted is NAB’s Currency-to-Currency foreign exchange rate. Allow 2-3 Australian business days for funds reloaded via BPAY to appear on your card. The exchange rate that’ll be applied is the rate at the time of processing, not when the BPAY transaction is initiated. Reloads are calculated using the NAB Currency-to-Currency foreign exchange rate. For further information see the NAB Traveller Card Product Disclosure Statement and Terms and Conditions (PDF, 389KB).
2 Withdrawals and transactions
Some operators and merchants may directly charge a fee. Daily transaction and ATM withdrawal limits apply. Transactions and fees that require a currency conversion are calculated using Mastercard foreign exchange rates and are subject to NAB’s Foreign Currency Conversion fee.
3 By selecting ‘credit’ you are accessing the card funds on your card to make withdrawals and purchases. It does not provide you with any credit. NAB does not provide you with any credit in connection with the card.
