Eligibility criteria

  1. You're 14 years or older. If you’re under the age of 14, you’ll need to visit a NAB branch with your parent or guardian to open your account. Learn how to open a bank account for children.

  2. You're an Australian resident for tax purposes .

  3. You have an Australian mobile number.

ID requirements for new customers

If you're new to NAB, you'll need to meet the eligibility criteria listed above, as well as provide one form of ID if you're over 18, or two if you're under 18:

  • Passport (Australian or foreign)
  • Australian driver's licence
  • Birth certificate
  • Medicare card (you'll need a second ID with this)

Verifying your ID

You’ll need a smartphone to scan your ID, and to take a selfie for verification

If you’re not able to do this because you don’t have a smartphone or for any other reason, please call 13 22 65 or visit a branch.

If you’re applying for a joint account, the smartphone requirements don’t apply for you. You’ll be able to verify your ID on any device.

Other things to consider

When applying for a NAB iSaver, you can also add a NAB Classic Banking account during your application. Visit the product information for NAB Classic Banking before you start your application.

If you don't have an existing NAB transaction account to access funds in your NAB iSaver, we'll require you to open a NAB Classic Banking account and NAB Visa Debit card as part of your NAB iSaver application.

It’s always worth taking a moment to read about each product so you can find the one that suits your needs.

Joint account information

To apply for a joint account, please visit our joint accounts page for important details, and make sure you read through the following information before applying.

  • Joint accounts are designed for people who want to manage shared everyday expenses or savings together. By applying online, both applicants receive full access and agree that either person can operate the account on their own, including making deposits and withdrawals. If you want payments to require approval from both holders, you’ll need to apply in branch.

  • When you apply online for a joint NAB iSaver, you’ll also need to open a joint NAB Classic Banking account. This transaction account is used to move money to and from your iSaver. Because it’s a joint transaction account, either account holder can access the money, including with their own NAB Visa Debit card (if cards are added). Each joint account holder can have a Visa Debit card. If this is your first NAB transaction account, you’ll need to open a Visa Debit card as part of your online application.

If either applicant already has an eligible NAB transaction account and doesn’t want to open another one, please visit a branch. A NAB banker can help open the joint NAB iSaver without creating an additional transaction account.

  • Age requirements
You can apply online when both applicants are 18 years or over. If you are under 18, please visit a branch.

    How to apply online
A joint account means both of you need to complete the application. We’ll only open the account once both parts are finished and approved. If either applicant is new to NAB, you’ll need to complete the online application form together. If you both already bank with NAB, one person starts the application and invites the other by email and mobile number. Please visit our joint accounts page for specific information about how to apply.

    Before you start:

    • Allow time to complete the application in one go, it can’t be saved
    • Each applicant must complete their part in a single session
    • Invited applicants have up to 7 days to finish before the application expires
    • Read things to consider before applying to understand what add on products may be available as part of your application.

    Government concession card holders
If both applicants already bank with NAB and either of you have a government concession card, you will need to apply in branch or contact us to apply your overdraw preferences to your joint account. If either applicant if new to NAB, you can choose your overdraw settings in the online joint account form.

    • Applications for joint accounts can only be made via the website or in person, not via the NAB app or NAB Internet Banking.

  • If you’re feeling unsure about a joint account, it’s ok to pause. Feeling pressured to combine money can be a sign of financial abuse. Confidential support is available through our Extra Care Support services. It’s also worth knowing that applying online for a joint NAB iSaver means opening a joint NAB Classic Banking account to move money in and out. Either account holder can access the funds, including with their own Visa Debit card if added. You can also read more about what to consider before you apply on our joint accounts page.
